Specializing in Sleep and Pulmonary Disorders

Sleep Disorders

  • Sleep apnea is a condition that occurs during sleep whereby breathing stops for periods of time.
These stops in breathing are accompanied by drops in oxygen levels leading to disrupted and non-restorative sleep.
Symptoms include:● Snoring ● Daytime Sleepiness and Difficulty staying awake during the day● Morning Headaches ● Irritability ● Oral Dryness● Difficulty staying asleep
    Consequences include:● High Blood Pressure ● Heart Disease● Stroke● Weight Gain/Obesity

  • Insomnia encompasses trouble falling asleep and/or staying asleep, such that sleep quality is not adequate resulting in daytime sleepiness and other adverse effects on quality of life.
Insomnia can be a consequence of another sleep disorder or medical disorder, but can also be a primary disorder with no recognizable underlying cause.

  • Restless leg syndrome is a disorder described as an irresistible urge to move one's legs, specifically in the evenings while at rest. This is a recognizable sensation and movement of the legs relieves the uncomfortable sensation.
Periodic limb movements are non-voluntary movements of the legs that occur during sleep and can disrupt the normal sleep cycles causing reduced quality and non-restorative sleep.

  • Narcolepsy is a cause of daytime sleepiness. It is caused by lack of a neurotransmitter in the brain required to maintain wakefulness during the day. It can be accompanied by other symptoms such as sleep related hallucinations, cataplexy (loss of muscle tone with a strong emotion), and sleep paralysis (feeling of being paralyzed when waking from sleep). Narcolepsy can also be accompanied by disrupted sleep during the night.

  • Parasomnias are abnormal behaviors that occur during sleep. These include:● Sleep Walking ● Night Terrors● REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (Acting out dreams)

Pulmonary Disorders

  • COPD is a chronic lung condition resulting from damage to the lungs. This results in inflammation of the lung tissue and airways which makes breathing difficult.
Smoking is the most common cause of COPD, but it can also be caused by exposure to irritating fumes, second hand smoke, dust, and/or chemicals.
Emphysema and Chronic Bronchitis are two subgroups of COPD.
Symptoms include:● Trouble catching your breath, especially with exertion ● Wheezing or whistling sounds when breathing ● Ongoing cough with mucus production ● Chest tightness/heaviness

  • Asthma is a condition caused by narrowing and swelling of the airways with production of mucus. This makes breathing difficult and can trigger coughing, whistling sounds (wheezing), and shortness of breath.
Different types of asthma include:● Exercise-Induced: May be worse when the air is cold and dry.● Occupational: Triggered by exposure to irritants in the environment such as dust, chemicals, and gases.● Allergy-Induced: Triggered by airborne substances such as mold and pollen.
Symptoms include:● Shortness of breath ● Wheezing ● Nocturnal cough which disrupts sleep ● Cough worsened by infections/colds

  • Pulmonary fibrosis occurs when lung tissue becomes damaged and scarred. The thickening of the lung tissue makes it difficult for the lungs to work properly as their ability to expand is hindered. Lung damage is not reversible.
There are multiple causes, but at times a definitive cause cannot be found. This is called Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.
Symptoms include:● Dry Cough● Shortness of Breath ● Non-intentional weight loss ● Widening and rounding of the tips of fingers/toes (Clubbing)

  • Sarcoidosis is a condition in which groups of immune cells aggregate and form granulomas in the lungs. These can be seen on imaging of the chest. It can be caused by both genetic and environmental factors.
Symptoms include:● Fatigue ● Weight loss ● Low grade fever● Ongoing dry cough● Shortness of breath ● Wheezing

  • Lung nodules, or pulmonary nodules, are spots on the lung seen on images of the chest (chest x-ray or CT scan). They can be incidentally found during routine exam for some other reason. Most of these are benign. Depending upon the size, some nodules may need further evaluation such as biopsy or further lung scans to determine their significance.

Sleep is that golden chain that ties health and our bodies together.
